Making the switch to cleaner beauty

Self-proclaimed product junkie here. The first step is to admit you have a problem. I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup until 9th grade, and from there on, I was down the rabbit hole. My aunt was a makeup artist with MAC, and always gave me tons of samples, so I had expensive taste from the beginning. For some reason, I was also obsessed with having clean skin, so I knew to wash my makeup off every day and to moisturize. I have since upgraded my skincare regimen, and I’m still very much obsessed with my skin.

One thing I did not ever think about or care about was the ingredients in the products I was using. As I’ve gotten older these things are more important to me, but before I couldn’t care less. *Enter Beautycounter* One thing I didn’t want to sacrifice was performance. I knew that my Clinique Dramatically Different Face Lotion worked well for my face, and I didn’t care at all about the $28 price tag. I also didn’t care a lick about the ingredients. The first product I tried with Beautycounter was the charcoal cleansing bar. It worked as well as, if not better, than any of my other expensive cleansers. But what really sold me was the Beautycounter mission.

The Never List

Beautycounter’s mission is to get safer products in the hands of everyone. When I say safer products, I mean much safer. BC has banned 1500 harmful or potentially harmful ingredients. The US has not passed a law regulating the safety of ingredients since 1938, and the US only partially bans 30 ingredients. These 1500 ingredients are known as the Never List, and Beautycounter continues to third party test the makeup line for heavy metals.

Performance on par

I have not yet found a Beautycounter product that makes me feel as if I am sacrificing performance in order to use a safer product. I know there are women who have no-fuss routines. Maybe a good cleanser and a solid moisturizer. But if you’re like me, then you have a daytime and a nighttime routine, and some products that only get used 1x/2x a week, and then you spin in a circle while in your steamy bathroom chanting “oh skin care gods, keep my face dewy.” My husband literally showers with bar soap and shampoo, and puts deodorant on. He looks at the bathroom cabinet full of vials, bottles, tubes, tins and droppers and shakes his head. I won’t lie and say that I have switched out every single thing I own with Beautycounter’s products (I truly believe MACs Fix+ is manufactured in Heaven.) However, a large majority of my products are now safer, and I am very happy about that. My skincare and makeup routine makes me feel good about what I’m putting on my face and body.

FAAAAVS

Ok, so here are my new faves. These products will be with me forever.

HOLY GRAIL. I use the cleansing balm obsessively. My face feels so soft and moisturized after using. You need this in your life. Do yourself a favor…don’t balk at the price. It pays for itself a million times over, I swear it.

This. Moisturizer. Is. So. Good. I use the Adaptive Moisture Lotion as my daily face lotion. I get dry patches on the sides of my nose and sometimes my forehead, and this balances all of that out on my face.

I love the Tint Skin Foundation. Its super hydrating for a foundation. Sometimes I find that liquid foundations go on my face heavily and leave lines. With the tint skin, it applies like a silky lotion, and the coverage is so good. I highly recommend this.

I have had a weird problem with lip products. Sometimes, certain lipsticks, glosses and toothpastes cause the skin around my lips to break out in a weird rash. I switched to Toms toothpaste YEARS ago over this, and I’m wary of lip products because it’s such an uncomfortable hassle when my lips are red and itchy. (I know, super weird). Since using Beautycounters Sheer lipstick and lip gloss, I haven’t had one single issue. The colors are so pretty and they don’t dry my lips out. And the gold tubes. SO CUTE.

Ok, so I’m gonna end this; otherwise, I’ll be talking about Beautycounter for entirely too long on one blog post. I will make one more point….the clean beauty aspect is the main focus of my switch. However, I would be crazy to not be happy about the business side of Beautycounter. I get to sell products that I truly believe in. I get to promote a women owned, B-corp business that has everyone’s health and wellness in mind. I get to make a pretty nice commission with every sale. My goal is to work part-time as an RN and run my successful BC business. Let me know if you want more info on this! I am happy to share!
