Let’s talk head shape. For some reason, the shape of my head is not even a little accommodating to headbands. They slide right up, pulling my hair along with them, revealing my forehead that narrows to a widows peak that I would just as soon keep covered and hidden. Enter: big hats. With a big hat, I don’t have to worry about exposing my giant forehead, and its a perfect accessory, in my opinion.
For a long time, while discovering my own personal style, I avoided hats. Every once in a while I would pull on a baseball cap for running errands. I thought that with my very curly hair, hats would look goofy. Boy was I wrong. I have actually grown to love the way my curls sit around my face while wearing a big hat like a flat brim or a floppy style. So this is reason #1: I can avoid doing my hair by pairing my outfit with a big hat. WIN. I can just let the curls be free, yet tamed under the brim.
Reason #2: Hats can be used as a basic accessory or can completely dress up an outfit for a night out. I’m picturing sleek black leggings (the Spanx Moto ones, if I’m being honest they’re the BEST.), a black top, maybe a grey cashmere vest and a BIG WIDE BLACK HAT. BOOM. Tres chic. Or maybe you just want to wear a simple dress with a long cardigan and a floppy wide brim for a trip to Costco. Perfection.
Finally, I love big hats because not everyone will rock one. Reason #3 …I think they add a pop of uniqueness. And to be honest, the bigger the better! My absolute favorites so far have been from Gigipip. I have a short brim straw boater- Faye. A stiff straw pork pie- Bre. A Gambler- Ginger, and a felt boater (my current fave)- Dahlia. AS SOON AS they restock the oatmeal Monroe, I’ll add a 5th to my Gigipip collection. I also have quite a few felt floppy brim hats.
